This week is about Elder Abuse Awareness. Southern Podiatry is supporting this campaign which is in its tenth year.
As Registered Medical Professionals, Treena and the Podiatrists are aware of the statistics that accompany this type of abuse in all its forms. Southern Podiatry is a safe place for the young and old.
Whilst the medical teams know what this abuse is- how can you recognise it? And what is it?
The definition of this type of abuse is “Elder Abuse and Neglect is a single or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.”
If you have ever wondered what Elder abuse consists of, I recommend you watch the following videos.

In the week of June 15-22 Age Concerns around New Zealand will be holding events and speaking through the media to raise awareness of elder abuse and neglect. Every year, thousands of older New Zealanders are being abused and it’s our responsibility as a community to ensure that older people are always respected, never abused.
If you require any further information on this topic, or if you have any concerns that you wish to discuss, contact Age Concern for more information.
